Epignosis - Revelation Knowledge

The Holy Spirit speaks to us in our spirit. Most times, it is a gentle nudge we have concerning a matter, circumstances, place, or people. Some may call it "intuition" or "premonition."

It is an "Epignosis" -- a "revelation knowledge" you have inside yourself that shows that something is either alright or not right. It is not a judgment but an internal knowledge. There are times when I am asked to describe it and I do not have any rational definition except that I "know."

EPIGNOSIS (articulated as e-pē’-gnō-sēs) is a Greek word that means "accurate and precise knowledge." It appears twenty times in the New Testament: fifteen times by the Apostle Paul, once in Hebrews, and four times by Peter.

It is not used in the same way as other words that are translated as "knowledge" (gnosis, ginosko, epiginosko, etc.). Epignosis is a term used to describe God's moral, upright, perfect, and divine wisdom.

Philippians 1:9 -- And this I pray, that your love may abound yet more and more in knowledge and in all judgment;”

Paul's prayer here is for the Philippians' love to grow in precision and accuracy, as well as in every judgment.

Colossians 3:10 -- and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it.

The new man that believers put on is renewed IN exact and perfect knowledge after the image of Christ, according to Paul.

Ephesians 1:17 -- "I pray that the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the glorious Father, will give you spiritual wisdom and revelation in your growing knowledge of him,"

He pleads with God the Father of Glory, the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, to grant the Ephesian Christians the spirit of wisdom.

Paul prayed for four things for these Ephesians believers:

  • an abundance of love,
  • a full transformation of the inner being,
  • the spirit of God's ultimate wisdom,
  • and the spirit of the spiritual revelation of truth.

Paul prayed that all four of them would be IN Epignosis. This implies that these Gentile born-again believers required more than their current knowledge. This is true for us today.

It does not imply that those with Epignosis are entirely aware of everything. It means that when we have the Epignosis (revelation knowledge) of scripture (for example, John 3:16), we genuinely experience God's understanding and recognize it with complete discernment. The scripture's power overtakes us; we "understand it," and it has an impact on our lives in every way.

These sorts of knowledge are pale in comparison to epignosis. Where do we start on the road to Epignosis understanding?

Proverbs 1:7 -- The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge: but fools despise wisdom and instruction.

Proverbs 15:14 -- The heart of him that has understanding seeks knowledge: but the mouth of fools feeds on foolishness.

Many people rely on earthly, mortal understanding as well as the strength of money, influence, and power that is in the world. Both earthly wisdom and money are temporary defenses, according to the scripture, but the excellency or advantage of spiritual knowledge is that people who combine it with wisdom and knowledge have life.

A person, who is born from above and has the Holy Spirit dwelling in them, should expect God to lead them daily. The main way is through "revelation" within. The Holy Spirit does not lead you by possessing your mind or your character. No, He guides you by operating with your faculties and gently impressing His direction in your heart.

He does it so subtly that you can miss Him and His guidance. One of the disciplines you should work on is sensitivity to the Holy Spirit's leading. Take note of all those leadings and assess the outcomes.

The Holy Spirit isn't responsible for anything you feel inside. You'll get it wrong sometimes, and you'll get it right other times. Don't feel bad if you miss His leadership.

Continue listening to Him and grow in Epignosis under His guidance and leadership as He opens up the scriptures.
