Who Is The AntiChrist?

In this post, we hope to discover answers to questions such as, "Who is the Antichrist?" How can we know him from the scriptures? Is the Antichrist going to be a person or a collection of individuals, nations, world leaders, etc.? Or is he an organization or a spirit that operates in people's lives? Let us briefly understand the widespread “Antichrist” concept that pervades Christendom today.

According to popular belief, the Antichrist is Satan's own "seed," who has already been born and is hidden somewhere in some part of the world (different people giving different examples), being fed and educated by the Devil himself. As soon as the Church is raptured from the Earth, this "super being" of cunning and ability will appear on the global stage as a peacemaker and wonder worker.

His first agreement will be to give peace to Israel in exchange for allowing them to continue worshipping in a rebuilt Temple in Jerusalem by performing animal sacrifices.

However, after three years of peace, the Antichrist will break his peace treaty with Israel, prevent them from entering the Temple, and begin a three-and-a-half-year period of suffering.

This terrible time of suffering will only end when the Lord Jesus and His believers descend from heaven in a cloud to establish His earthly kingdom on the throne of David in Jerusalem. This is the great teaching that has kept the church on pins and needles for years.

The mighty apostle of the Lord, John gives us information on what the antichrist is.

1 John 2:18-22 -- Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time. They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us. But you have an unction from the Holy One, and you know all things. I have not written to you because you know not the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth. Who is a liar but he that denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, that denies the Father and the Son.

The immature in the Church are referred to as "little children" by John. He informs them that it was the end of the age and that numerous antichrists were already there. Antichrists, in this sense, were individuals who had sprung from among them and turned against Christ and His body. They were labeled as the antichrist.

The Bible has very little to say about the antichrist. The term "antichrist" occurs in the Bible just five times. None are in Daniel, Revelation, or any other prophetic book. Four of these five are in First John and the fifth one in Second John. Antichrist is referred to as HE in the singular, or they in the plural.

The Apostle John under the inspiration of the Holy Spirit also warns about deceivers and antichrists, claiming it to be the last hour (which means the last days of the Old covenant) and the destruction of the temple was sooner than expected.

To him, the fact that in his day many individuals in the churches became antichrists was clear evidence that it was the "last hour." John lived in the early part of that "last hour" and yet today, we also have many antichrists in this dispensation of the Holy Spirit.

The Messianic hope was not only among the Jewish people but also all over the world. The Roman historian Tacitus spoke of the worldwide expectation of a King rising from Israel, who would be the King and the ruler of the world. And so, Jesus warned His disciples saying:

Matthew 24:5 -- For many will come in (on the strength of) My name [appropriating the name which belongs to Me], saying, I am the Christ (the Messiah), and they will lead many astray.

We live in a day of present truth where we understand through the scriptures that Christ returned in mighty spirit and power at Pentecost and now reigns over His kingdom of redeemed people, purging and working in a "little flock" of the faithful to become the first fruits of His redemption.

In due time to bless all nations, restore all things, and deliver all creation from the bondage of corruption that God may be ALL-IN-ALL. Naturally, we must anticipate the "antichrist" spirit to emerge in this generation as it did in that one.

To begin with, John's basic description of the antichrist is "the one who rejects the Father and the Son." If we interpret John's remark correctly, he is stating that you cannot claim to worship the Father while also denying that Jesus Christ, whom He sent, is the Son of God.

In other words, to deny that Jesus the Christ is the Son of God is to deny the authority of the Father who sent Him, since you cannot accept a person's authority while also rejecting or denying his messenger.

It is a belief in the Father alone, without acknowledging the Son. In essence, this deceitful spirit denies not just the Son, but also the sonship of all believers through Christ. According to Jesus, there is no other way to the Father but by Him alone.

The Bible makes no mention of a person known as "the Antichrist." Many people may be surprised by this. During His earthly ministry, the Lord Jesus never used the term "antichrist."

In the Book of Revelation, John makes no mention of an antichrist. Neither Paul nor Peter mentioned such a person in their writings.

Religious people have developed their own image of fear throughout history. They combine the abomination of desolation spoken of by Jesus, Paul's son of perdition, the Beast in Revelation, and the number 666 to form an imagined object of fear known as the Antichrist, who would reign during the so-called Great Tribulation.

Again, he said that the coming of the antichrist is a sign of the final hour. What time might it be? It is undoubtedly the hour between Passover and the destruction of the temple at Jerusalem in 70 A.D. Pentecost was part of the last days.

Peter said, quoting Joel,

Acts 2:17 -- And it shall come to pass in the last days, said God, I will pour out of my Spirit on all flesh: and your sons and your daughters shall prophesy, and your young men shall see visions, and your old men shall dream dreams..."

When Peter and Joel use the phrase "in the last days," they were referring to events that would occur within a certain time frame, one of which is the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. As a result, just as the Holy Spirit is a sign of the end times, the antichrist will also appear at this time.

Many claim these days to be the last days looking at the prophecy of Pentecost that the Holy Spirit is being poured even today. However, we must understand that Peter was quoting Joel to explain the first time the Holy Spirit was poured on them as this was never experienced before and some people were confused, while some others called them drunk.

Since it was the last days of the Old Covenant Age (Mosaic Age) does not mean the Holy Spirit is not being poured today. The Holy Spirit was a sign of the last days then but also of the New Covenant now.

Hebrews 9:26 -- for then he would have had to suffer repeatedly since the foundation of the world. But as it is, he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself.

Romans 13:11-12 -- Besides this you know the time, that the hour has come for you to wake from sleep. For salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed. The night is far gone; the day is at hand. So then let us cast off the works of darkness and put on the armor of light.

1 Peter 4:7 -- The end of all things is at hand; therefore be self-controlled and sober-minded for the sake of your prayers.

1 John 2:18 -- Children, it is the last hour, and as you have heard that antichrist is coming, so now many antichrists have come. Therefore we know that it is the last hour.

Peter says “the end of all things” which implies the end of the Old Covenant Age is very near and John even said it was “the last hour.”

The Old covenant Age began with Moses around 1250-1300 B.C. and it was abolished by Jesus on the Cross in A.D. 30

Colossians 2:14-15 -- by canceling the record of debt that stood against us with its legal demands. This he set aside, nailing it to the cross.

Furthermore, John said, "...they went out from among us and now there are many Antichrists," implying that these individuals were previously believers but left the Lord. Is this not evidence that the Church is the best location to search for the Antichrist spirit?

Yes, indeed, if you take it in the context of John's statement, they must be the Jews who embraced Christ and then turned around and started to embrace Judaism, rejecting the redeeming Grace that is in Christ for the Law.

This is why Jesus rebukes the Church at Smyrna because they claimed what they were not.

Revelation 2:9 -- I know your works, and tribulation, and poverty, (but you are rich) and I know the blasphemy of them which say they are Jews, and are not, but are the synagogue of Satan.

John again warns the new believers in the body of Christ,

1 John 2:18 -- Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; whereby we know that it is the last time.

The Spirit of Christ writes through John that the arrival of the antichrist was at the end of the age, and the fact that there were "many antichrists" at the time showed that John himself was living in the "last hour," which was the end of the age of the Mosaic Old Covenant.

John saw many antichrists in his day, after only a few decades of progress into the Spirit's dispensation, how much more can we say today that there are "many antichrists" after two thousand years of apostasy and shame.

2 Timothy 3:13 -- But evil men and seducers shall wax worse and worse, deceiving, and being deceived.

This is true of today in the same manner as it was true of the days of the first-century church. How much more should we expect to find antichrists in the Church today?

In John and Paul's day, there were many antichrists. The number has gradually increased over the years, to the point that we are now surrounded by these. But who are they, what do they look like, and how can we identify them?

First, examine the word's definition. It is derived from a composite Greek term composed of the preposition "anti" and the Greek word for Christ, "Christos."

"Anti" is a Greek word that means "opposed to," "instead of," or both. "Christos" is a Greek word that meaning "anointed."

When "anti" is used with a word denoting an agent or function of any type, the compound denotes a vice-function, a function of the same kind but opposing, or occasionally both.

Some people exclusively use the first definition - a person who is "against" Christ. However, this is not a particularly precise point of identification. Millions of people have opposed Christ.

Prior to his conversion, Paul, who was then Saul was "against" Christ. Jews, pagans, communists, and people of other non-Christian faiths have all been hostile to Christ.

In India, we hear of various stories of Christians being persecuted in various parts of the country. However, such a wide interpretation of the term could not be what John intended. His description is far more specific than this.

When John spoke of certain people, who were a type of antichrist, which was to come, he did not refer to all opposers of Christ which is usually a norm in understanding. Instead, he referred to a certain class of people - apostates who were teaching things that were contrary to the revelation imparted by the Holy Spirit.

These were not openly against Christ; they were professing Christians and apparent ministers of Christ. They were wolves in sheep clothing. Therefore we find that the word "antichrist" properly signifies one who opposes or one who sets himself up, appropriating some of the attributes of Christ.

That is, antichrist would pose as Christ and therefore be AGAINST Christ, usurping the position that rightfully belongs to Christ alone. Anything that is put In Place Of Christ is antichrist.

We have contained and practiced a wide range of attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, doctrines, rituals, ceremonies, sacraments, ordinances, religious forms, and Babylonish and Egyptian customs that have taken on the role of truth in our life. These may have included parts of the truth, but they are not the living essence and reality of Christ.

They were a shadow with no substance; a shape with no essence. Any replacement that takes away from his indwelling life is antichrist because Christ is LIFE and came to give us Life.

So, what are we looking at here? The antichrist is not just working on behalf of another person, as we see in the movies being the villain's right-hand man, but is actively usurping the office or kingdom. And the term "Christos" simply means "Christ or anointing."

As a result, when we speak of the antichrist, we are referring to ANYONE who usurps the throne intended for Jesus Christ. And all those who, in one way or another, encourage such a trend, whether through teaching, lifestyle, or church structure, so that man is elevated to the position of being worshipped, are all under the influence of the antichrist spirit.

So, it is better to understand now that it is the spirit of the antichrist that is at work through people. John said that the ones born of God--the children of God overcome the spirit of the antichrist because the greater Christ lives in each of us.

This definition is best summarised by the Apostle John,

1 John 4:3-4 -- And every spirit that confesses not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof you have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world. You are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.

Simply believing in Jesus as a historical religious leader or in his fleshly characteristics without acknowledging Him as the Christ (Anointed One) also qualifies as antichrist.

Although the full description of the Antichrist is not revealed in the Old Testament, it contains references to people and nations that pass on as the Antichrist; which are both individuals and nations commonly referred to as the "sons of Belial."

Belial (ungodly) in Greek means "without profit, worthlessness" which is a proper name associated with evil.

Psalms 18:4 --The sorrows of death compassed me, and the floods of ungodly men made me afraid.

2 Corinthians 6:15 -- And what concord has Christ with Belial? or what part has he that believes with an infidel?

The spirit of the “sons of Belial” manifests itself in the following ways,

Deuteronomy 13:13 -- Certain men, the children of Belial, are gone out from among you, and have withdrawn the inhabitants of their city, saying, Let us go and serve other gods, which you have not known..."

1 Samuel 2:12 -- Now the sons of Eli were sons of Belial; they knew not the LORD.

1 Samuel 2:17 -- Why the sin of the young men was very great before the LORD: for men abhorred the offering of the LORD.

1 Samuel 2:25 -- If one man sin against another, the judge shall judge him: but if a man sin against the LORD, who shall entreat for him? Notwithstanding they listened not to the voice of their father, because the LORD would slay them.

1 Samuel 10:27 -- But the children of Belial said, How shall this man save us? And they despised him, and brought no presents. But he held his peace.

1 Samuel 25:17 -- Now therefore know and consider what you will do; for evil is determined against our master, and against all his household: for he is such a son of Belial, that a man cannot speak to him.

1 Samuel 25:25 -- Let not my lord, I pray you, regard this man of Belial, even Nabal: for as his name is, so is he; Nabal is his name, and folly is with him: but I your handmaid saw not the young men of my lord, whom you did send.

1 Kings 21:10 -- And set two men, sons of Belial, before him, to bear witness against him, saying, You did blaspheme God and the king. And then carry him out, and stone him, that he may die.

1 Kings 21:13 -- And there came in two men, children of Belial, and sat before him: and the men of Belial witnessed against him, even against Naboth, in the presence of the people, saying, Naboth did blaspheme God and the king. Then they carried him forth out of the city, and stoned him with stones, that he died.

They were knowingly making a false statement after swearing to an oath, to tell the truth. These are some of the traits of people that rebel (anti) against God and the Lord despised them.

2 Chronicles 13:7 -- And there are gathered to him vain men, the children of Belial, and have strengthened themselves against Rehoboam the son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was young and tenderhearted, and could not withstand them.

Psalms 101:3 -- I will set no wicked thing before my eyes: I hate the work of them that turn aside; it shall not stick to me.

This similar spirit is at work in nations that resist God's righteous reign as King. Though commonly applied in Christianity as the fall of Lucifer, which in reality, is a satire (a mockery of the fall of the king and prince) taken of Isaiah Fourteen against the king of Babylon and Ezekiel Twenty-Eight against the king of Tyre are really a shadow to indicate vaguely, foreshadow a coming event, and to suggest or describe something in an informal way which truly foretells that which will befall the evil satanic nature of Adam that stands against.

These two tales illustrate the devastation that awaits nations that seize power. This futile fight for nations to thwart God's great plan for His people is also apparent in the destruction of the king of Gog who stood in opposition to God's own people.

Revelation 11:18 -- And the nations were angry, and your wrath is come, and the time of the dead, that they should be judged, and that you should give reward to your servants the prophets, and to the saints, and them that fear your name, small and great; and should destroy them which destroy the earth.

We can see from the above that the antichrist is a spirit which is also the spirit of Belial that opposes God's righteous activity in both individuals and nations. It is a spirit that operates in the children of disobedience.

From all these passages in the New Testament, it is quite apparent that antichrist is a lying and deceptive spirit that finds expression in a plurality of people already exhibited in John's day.

In the Bible, I discovered no indication of a single person ruling the nations as a future antichrist. I do not think it is one guy in history either. Neither Caesar Nero nor the Pope, as some claim. Although certain people in history may have worked by this spirit.

2 Thessalonians 2:3-8 -- Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition; Who opposes and exalts himself above all that is called God, or that is worshipped; so that he as God sits in the temple of God, showing himself that he is God. Remember you not, that, when I was yet with you, I told you these things? And now you know what withholds that he might be revealed in his time. For the mystery of iniquity does already work: only he who now lets will let, until he be taken out of the way. And then shall that Wicked be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the spirit of his mouth, and shall destroy with the brightness of his coming..."

Many believe that the apostle Paul referred to the Antichrist sitting in Jerusalem's temple when he wrote to the Thessalonians. When Paul spoke about the son of perdition in 2 Thessalonians 2:8, he did not use the Greek term 'hieron' to denote the holy place in the temple. Rather, he used the Greek term 'naos,' describing the Church as the Holy Spirit's assembly and temple.

On his journey to the Cross, Jesus declared to religious leaders, "Destroy this temple and I will build it up in three days."

John 2:19 -- Jesus answered and said to them, Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up.

Apostle John stated that Jesus referred to His body as the temple.

John 2:21 -- But he spoke of the temple of his body.

The Church became His body after the Cross, the reconstructed temple, and Father's House made up of numerous dwelling places. Paul said that believers are God's temple.

This is why the teaching that there will be a rebuilding of the temple in Jerusalem is false and has nothing to do with a believer in Christ who is God's temple. In fact, even if a temple is rebuilt in Jerusalem, it will have nothing to do with the CHurch, the true temple of the Lord.

1 Corinthians 3:16 -- Know you not that you are the temple of God, and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?

1 Corinthians 6:19  -- What? know you not that your body is the temple of the Holy Ghost which is in you, which you have of God, and you are not your own?

"Falling away" is not the Church's hidden rapture before the Antichrist comes. This "falling away" is the Greek word: "apostasy," describing departure and rebelling against truth. It relates to falsehood and sin.

This man of sin and son of perdition is a mature corporate manifestation of the true Church's deceptive and destructive dimension. It is a counterfeit that is revealed. But there's something holding back this man's exposure of wickedness. Before we examine what withholds this unlawful revelation, let us look at what it is disclosing.

The Greek word 'reveal' is: 'apocalypses' and implies "uncovering, exposing, or revealing." When the truth is revealed, uncovered, and exposed, it comes into power and frees us. But when the falsehood is exposed, it loses its strength.

The thing that preserves the falsehood and provides the rulership is a lack of information or ignorance. As soon as the truth is spoken, it exposes, reveals, and destroys the lie and deceit.

There is a false church that appears like the true genuine church and says wonderful things. It is a sinful corporate body, a false son of deceit. The real Church is God's corporate son, Christ's body. Paul considers the son of sin a mystery that was already at work before it was revealed.

The parable of the sower and the seed effectively explains this concept of exposure and removal. When the workers requested the sower to remove the false (tares) from the real crop, the sower replied,

Matthew 13:29-30 -- But he said, No; lest while you gather up the tares, you root up also the wheat with them. Let both grow together until the harvest: and in the time of harvest I will say to the reapers, Gather you together first the tares, and bind them in bundles to burn them: but gather the wheat into my barn.

The wheat maturity period is termed harvest time. This is also the period when tares mature. At this time, God sends His messengers to remove those who transgress and practice lawlessness from His Kingdom.

Throughout the centuries, God separated flesh from spirit at the time of harvest or maturity. There were two women in Abraham's home, Hagar the slave producing the flesh, and Sarah producing the Spirit as promised. Ishmael and Isaac grew raised in the home. When maturity arrived, God ordered Abraham to send away his slave wife and son.

Paul said that this mystery of iniquity works until that which now restrains is removed from the middle. I think ignorance must be eliminated. Ignorance protects lies from being revealed. But when eliminated, the falsehood is exposed and vanquished.

Also in this present kairos, God sends out His angels (messengers), His people carrying His voice, and when the truth reveals Christ and His kingdom, it will expose the son of deceit and destroy his authority.

1 John 4:1-3 -- Dear friends, do not believe every spirit, but test the spirits to determine if they are from God, because many false prophets have gone out into the world. By this you know the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesses Jesus as the Christ who has come in the flesh is from God, but every spirit that refuses to confess Jesus, that spirit is not from God, and this is the spirit of the antichrist, which you have heard is coming, and now is already in the world.

Who is the antichrist, according to these verses? They define antichrist as anybody who rejects that Jesus Christ has appeared in the flesh or that Jesus is the Christ.

The Holy Spirit, speaking through the Apostle John, does not predict the appearance of a particular antichrist but the spirit of the antichrist. He simply said that you have heard that this one is on its way.

To put it another way, you have probably heard that boils originate from frogs and that you should not trim your nails in the evening or night. Anything does not make it true just because you have heard it, and it does not make you believe it just because you have heard it. You are not claiming that boils are caused by frogs.

Similarly, the Lord is not claiming that antichrist will appear at some point in the future. He is just stating that he has heard that a spirit is on the way. Then He explains what antichrist is.

The Holy Spirit used a figure of speech to correct a mistaken first-century church belief: "Church, you are believing an illusions theology." The fact is that anyone rejects that Jesus is the Christ or that Jesus Christ has come in the flesh is the antichrist, and he is already in the world.

Antichrist is closer and more deadly than we believed. This spirit appears in the religious mentality and the assembling of households of religion. There is a major difference between the households of faith and that of religion. It parades as a disciple of Jesus but works aggressively against the truth and Christ's presence.

This spirit hates and fears that Christ has come in the flesh and is continually coming in the flesh through His body, the Church, and will finally arrive in His magnificent return.

When Jesus arrived on earth, He was proclaimed as the Christ, the Son of the living God. When Jesus, the Christ, departed the world during His ascension, He went as Head, but Christ's body remained on earth. The night He was betrayed He took bread and declared: "This is my body..."

This antichrist spirit works in numerous ways. It does not deny that Jesus arrived since it is not anti-Jesus, it is anti-Christ. What terrifies and threatens this spirit is that Christ lives through His Body -- the ekklesia, in everyone who believes and obeys.

True, I agree that it is one of the definitions of how to recognise an antichrist and John is very clear on how to recognise the spirit of antichrist working through someone. I have mentioned it earlier in the post as well.
