New Man In Christ

A Christian is someone who is "in Christ" - or in whom Christ resides. That individual is born from above. They have been rescued and delivered. However, none of us begins that way. We are not born as new creations in Christ into this world. Rather than that, we are born "in Adam."

Two beings are shown here. There is an old man in Adam, referred to as the old creation, and a new man in Christ referred to as the new creation. In Adam, we are all born into this world. However, in Christ, we are born again - born from above.

So, what distinguishes the two?

Christ is inside us. A person born from above is united with the Lord and becomes one spirit with Him.

1 Corinthians 6:17 -- But the one united with the Lord is one spirit with him.

It is critical to understand that one born from above is not made one with Christ as a "soul or natural man."

No. The one born from above becomes one in spirit with Christ. Therefore, the old nature persists — despite our spiritual union with Christ. However, a person who is only "in Adam" is not spiritually united to Christ. They have a deceased spirit, as well as their natural man and body.

THE OLD MAN

Each individual born into the Adam race – and we are all born into the Adam race – is what the Bible refers to as "the natural man." In fact, the Greek calls it, "the man's soul (psyche)."

This is who we are by nature, as a "natural man." It consists of the natural intellect, will, emotions, and what we would refer to as our human soul or psychic characteristics. That is who we are as Adam's children.

However, there are certain characteristics that we lack. For instance, we have no recall of God. We have no life in the spirit - our human soul has been corrupted to the point of death. In short, people born in Adam have no resemblance to the Living God.

This reality implies that all mankind does in Adam is actually in opposition to God. We are all prisoners of the world of darkness, ruled by the adversary. This has permeated the very essence of what it is to be a human person.

Now, we have no control over any of this - because "that which is born of the flesh IS flesh."

John 3:6 -- What is born of the flesh is flesh, and what is born of the Spirit is spirit.

We cannot improve our circumstances with good deeds, education, or any other kind of training. Neither of those things, however, can maintain our fallen nature — they can only modify its outer presentation.

In Adam, we can never be more than flesh — even if it is a so-called "holy flesh." In summary, no one is born with the ability to alter the sort of creature they are.

Naturally, we are discussing sinful nature here. Additionally, it is referred to as "the body of sin," "the body of death," or "the old man." Not only is mankind incapable of resolving or eradicating this, but it is also incapable of controlling it.

RULED BY SIN

In some manner, the natural man is ruled by the sin nature. Even though a person seems to be religious, his or her religiosity is nevertheless ruled by sinful nature, since, as stated before, "that which is born of the flesh IS flesh."

Not only is humanity's essence devoid of God, but it is also completely compatible with Satan. When Adam sinned, he lost his side of the relationship with God and fell under Satan's rule and the domain of darkness.

Because Adam was granted authority over everything earthly, he transferred that dominion to Satan — which comprised not only the world itself but also the earthly realm. This terrestrial world included all of humanity's earthly components. Thus, mankind is not only subject to the sin nature, but also to the enemy's spirit that dominates it.

What should be obvious is that there is no option for mankind other than a new birth as an entirely new species. Indeed, we must be given a new life - entirely by grace – a life that is not conceivable in Adam.

SPIRITUAL UNION IN CHRIST

Not only has God bestowed upon us a new life, but He has also bestowed upon us a Person who IS that Life, Jesus Christ. The spiritual union of Jesus Christ and a human being is referred to as "the new creature "IN" Christ Jesus." This is the case with the "new." Human beings are re-born in Christ.

2 Corinthians 5:17 -- So then, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; what is old has passed away – look, what is new has come!

As previously stated, we were all dead in Adam at the commencement of this age when born naturally into this world. However, when God leads a person to Christ and that person places their confidence and faith in Him, submitting to Him, they are "attached to the Lord and created one spirit with Him." This is the way to salvation. We are rescued and delivered as a result of our relation to LIFE HIMSELF.

You will see that God does not purify or destroy the existence of the old Adamic nature. Rather than that, the old nature is "passed over" – as far as oneness into Christ as the new creation is concerned – and, despite the presence of the old nature, the believer is joined to the Lord in Spirit.

Alternatively, rather than removing the old nature, Christ becomes one with the believer through resurrection life. This is somewhat mechanical and maybe misunderstood, but it is necessary to understand that believers continue to possess both their old and new natures.

Today, there are some teachings that assert that our old life is "exchanged" for the new. That is incorrect. This is another way of expressing that the old life is entirely replaced by the new. Indeed, Christ's presence within will reveal that old life.

Can Christians commit sin?

The Biblical teaching on this is unambiguous: If you are born from above, you will have two natures in this age that are diametrically opposed to one another.

EVERLASTING LIFE AND REDEMPTION

Once we understand that the believer is united to the Lord and created one spirit with Him, it becomes clear how a person is saved: they are saved because they are united to the One who "IS" life.

Colossians 3:4 -- When Christ (who is your life) appears, then you too will be revealed in glory with him.

John 14:6 -- Jesus replied, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Obviously, if we are united in spirit with Life, we will be united with HIS LIFE - united in HIM.

This indicates that God does not provide a thing called "Salvation" for us. No. God offers us Christ, and the instant we unite in heart with Him, HE becomes our salvation. This also implies that salvation is not a purely legal concept. This is not a pass to paradise. No. Christ is the means of salvation.

So, we see that a person who is spiritually dead is united and made alive in the Lord Jesus Christ. From that moment on, Christ is our life – and everything that God wants for mankind is included in Him.

Additionally, we observe a distinct division between the old creation "in us" and the new creation "in Christ." In this age, the old creation is not turned into the new creation. No. The believer has both of these natures.

SLAVES OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

During Christ's crucifixion, the Christian's old self was also crucified, freeing him from the slavery of sin.

Romans 6:6 -- We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

Our "slavery to sin has been replaced with slavery to righteousness.

Romans 6:18 -- and having been freed from sin, you became enslaved to righteousness.

Even the most spiritually grown persons are subject to a constant fight, according to Paul in Romans 7. To make matters worst for himself, he is guilty of doing the same things he despises and wishes he did not do. It is because of "sin residing in me," he claimed.

Romans 7:20 -- Now if I do what I do not want, it is no longer me doing it but sin that lives in me.

When it comes to his "inner being," he loves God's law, but "the members of my body" are "waging war against the law of our minds and render us as prisoners to the law of sin at work inside our members.

Romans 7:23 -- But I see a different law in my members waging war against the law of my mind and making me captive to the law of sin that is in my members.

It does not matter what labels they are known by, this is a typical illustration of the two. The point is that the struggle is genuine, and it will be waged by Christians for the rest of their days.

Hence, Paul exhorts Christians to put to death the works of the flesh and the way you can do it is by the Spirit.

Romans 8:13 -- (for if you live according to the flesh, you will die), but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body you will live.

Colossians 3:8 -- But now, put off all such things as anger, rage, malice, slander, abusive language from your mouth.

Because the Christian has both an old and new self, he or she must constantly renew his or her new self by renewing of their mind in the knowledge of Christ.

Colossians 3:10 -- and have been clothed with the new man that is being renewed in knowledge according to the image of the one who created it.

It is a never-ending process for the believer to be renewed, of course. The war against sin continues, but we are no longer under its dominion.

Romans 6:6 -- We know that our old man was crucified with him so that the body of sin would no longer dominate us, so that we would no longer be enslaved to sin.

As a Christian, you have been "born again" in Christ and He will finally "rescue [you] from this body of death." at the resurrection of the dead. Praise God—in the name of Jesus Christ the Lord.

Romans 7:24-25 -- Wretched man that I am! Who will rescue me from this body of death? Thanks be to God through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, I myself serve the law of God with my mind, but with my flesh I serve the law of sin.

We are Adam's descendants - naturally. However, we are spiritually joined with Christ. One was born naturally. The other is spiritual in origin. The one is a creature of this earth - earthy. The other is a manifestation of God in Christ.

The Christian life is about the renouncement of the old self and confidence in Christ - because He is our life.

Blessings,

Godwin.
