Mature In Christ

We are in the first monthJanuary 2022 and it represents a fresh beginning and is the ideal time to set objectives and make personal life modifications. I strongly advise you to do the same with your spiritual life. In other words, choose today what adjustments you will do in order to develop spiritually in 2022 and how those changes will manifest.

How? Consider the following points:

While the Bible reading and preaching on Sunday are necessary components of the church gathering, they are insufficient to sustain you all week. Counting on the Sunday preaching to maintain you spiritually during the week is like relying on breakfast to carry you throughout the day—it is insufficient.

I urge you to establish a practical game plan for 2022 to guarantee that you read God's Word on a consistent basis. This might include following a Bible reading schedule or focusing on one book of the Bible and analyzing it for many months using study Bibles and commentary.

You can also join a Bible study or a Bible Course which will help you grow in your understanding of scripture.

The advantages of Bible reading. While there are countless ways in which reading the Bible connects us to God and helps us on a daily basis, if we profess to follow Christ, it is critical for us to understand not just God's nature but also how He has carried out His purpose throughout history. We should desire this awareness in order to live more like Him and in accordance with his will.

It is critical that we pay attention to God and His messages. Not only may He lead our lives in this manner, but He can also enlighten us about Himself through the scriptures.

Jesus reminds us that God's word is true.

John 17:17 -- Set them apart in the truth; your word is truth.

We are made wise through the understanding of the Word.

2 Timothy 3:15 -- and how from infancy you have known the holy writings, which are able to give you wisdom for salvation through faith in Christ Jesus.

How we interact with others. How we should behave or respond under certain circumstances. Everything is contained inside. When should we relax, how should we pray and fast? How to handle individuals who have wronged you. Almost every circumstance will include guidelines on how to react.

Proverbs 16:20 -- The one who deals wisely in a matter will find success, and blessed is the one who trusts in the LORD.

If Bible reading is like food, then prayer is comparable to water, and as we all know, water is necessary for survival. Water is a common metaphor when speaking of the importance of the Word and prayer.

Ephesians 5:26 -- to sanctify her by cleansing her with the washing of the water by the word..."

I am amazed to encounter so many Christians who spend days without praying on a regular basis. While praying before meals and quietly on occasion is beneficial, a more vigorous prayer habit is necessary for ongoing spiritual development.

We need frequent prayer periods in a secluded area where we may,

  • Praise, worship and adore God
  • Introspect and ask forgiveness
  • Forgive all those who have hurt us
  • Express gratitude to God
  • Pray for our present and future

1 Thessalonians 5:16 -- "Rejoice always, pray without ceasing, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you."

I fully understand why many of us remain at home during these times of physical distance to be safe. If you are unable to leave your house, please do not feel obliged to do so.

1 John 1:7 -- But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus his Son cleanses us from all sin.

Many churches have upgraded their technological systems significantly since Covid-19 and I urge you to fellowship on Sunday mornings and join with God's people either in person or virtually.

1 Thessalonians 5:11 -- Therefore encourage one another and build one another up, just as you are doing.

The early Church fellowshipped on a regular basis. It was their lifestyle.

Acts 2:42 -- And they devoted themselves to the apostles’ teaching and the fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Are you satisfied and content with your life in Christ?

Paul informs us that he learnt to be satisfied in any circumstance.

Philippians 4:11-13 -- Not that I speak from want, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am. I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity; in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need. I can do all things through Him who strengthens me.

1 Timothy 6:6-12 --  But godliness with contentment is great gain. For we brought nothing into the world, and we can take nothing out of it. But if we have food and clothing, we will be content with that. People who want to get rich fall into temptation and a trap and into many foolish and harmful desires that plunge men into ruin and destruction. For the love of money is a root of all kinds of evil. Some people, eager for money, have wandered from the faith and pierced themselves with many griefs. But you, man of God, flee from all this, and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, endurance and gentleness. Fight the good fight of the faith. Take hold of the eternal life to which you were called when you made your good confession in the presence of many witnesses.

It is a skill he had to acquire, not one he was born with. It may be that God is training you to be satisfied and content in Him alone throughout this season of life. Be at rest always.

Proverbs 19:23 -- The fear of the LORD leads to life;  then one rests content, untouched by trouble.

Colossians 3:23-24 -- Whatever you do, do it enthusiastically, as something done for the Lord and not for men, knowing that you will receive the reward of an inheritance from the Lord. You serve the Lord Christ.

Are you prudent in your stewardship of this season? Financial resources, time, energy, and spiritual abilities. These were given to you and not bestowed upon you. Therefore, do not squander this opportunity. Make sensible use of this season by stewarding your time, skills, and possessions for the glory of God.

1 Peter 4:10 -- Based on the gift each one has received, use it to serve others, as good stewards of the varied grace of God.

How is your spiritual life progressing?

Christians that I most respect are always those who have a solid devotional life. And a daily discipline of time with God is necessary for joy and effectiveness. To walk in spiritual power is not a mystery but it is intrinsically linked to our dedication to the Word and Prayer.

Reading Christian books is one of the key ways I develop as a Christian. Without the works of men and women who strengthen my faith, I would be a million miles behind.

While I recognise that some of us are more inclined to read than others, I believe that every Christian should strive to increase their understanding of God. Schedule time in your day to read more excellent books even if it is only ten to fifteen minutes per day. That should be enough.

For those interested in serious study, you can begin with these BOOKS.

May we strive to be more mature in 2022 than the year left behind.
